Todd Larios - Larios Design
My interest in metal sculpture began in high school when I followed my brother to shop. It was there I fell in love with metal and dropped Spanish to take the class. The pure rawness, strength, and shininess of the material pulled me in. Working with loud saws, torches, drills, and the many other welding tools was fascinating. At some point my passion for working with metal stated to combine with my passion for minimalism and my love for simple shapes. It's hard to describe to somehow looking at a simple box can bring me pleasure, but it just does. Several years went by and I started coming up with furniture designs that I had never seen before. I began working on tables and beds.
My first wall sculpture idea came about trying to impress a girl. Even though it never worked with us, I think she really liked the piece. That experience opened my eyes to the idea of wall sculptures. These pieces are simple box influenced shapes driven by the strength of opposing sides. My overall goal is to try to achieve balance between the primitiveness of the material and the smoothness of the shape and surface. Creating a feeling of solidity when in reality the sculptures are hollow, I aim to clam the chaotic, expressing my love for minimalism.
