Humboldt School

Humboldt

Humboldt k-8 school is a beacon school in North Portland with a student body of 240. The school's cultural diversity reflects the community it is surrounded by. Many of the families are housed in The Humboldt Gardens, which operates a wide variety of free or low-cost services for Section 8 Participants. At the school 100% of the students qualify for free and reduced lunch.

Portland Public Schools, like the rest of Oregon, has been subject to severe cuts in funding which have impacted teaching salaries, sustainability, and has caused the demise of many programs and activities that have, historically, flourished in Portland. One of the programs that is being threatened at Humboldt School is the Art Program. There are many talented, aspiring artists at Humboldt, who greatly benefit from the program, and even in it's current state, it provides hope and inspiration to many students who typically lack motivation and interest in school.

With the Government's projected cuts, and considering the current economic climate in the all of the US- all art, music and P.E. programs in the country are endangered. At schools like Humboldt, with an even bigger socio-economic challenge, the threat is even more imminent.

Kevin Okerlund is a Para Educator at Humboldt School. He has designated his art show to be a benefit to help the art program at Humboldt. A quarter of the show's proceeds will go directly to this cause.
